1) Who can apply?
Gwynn Park High School, Laurel High School, and Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology graduating African American male students may apply.
2) Do I have to be a U.S. citizen in order to apply?
Yes. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in order to apply.
3) When is the deadline for submitting applications?
April 20th is the postmark deadline for submitting applications. If April 20th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, applications should be postmarked by the following Monday.
4) Can I apply on-line?
No. You may download the application from our website and mail it to us, but it is not possible to apply on line because of the need for your and your parent or guardian’s signatures. Once you download the application, be sure to complete pages 1 - 3. Page 4 lists the scholarship criteria. There are sections for you, your parent/guardian, and high school guidance counselor to complete.
5) Can I fax or email my application?
No. You must mail your application.
6) Is an essay required?
Yes. You must submit a one page but not more than three-paged typed personal essay describing your personal and career goals to include your proposed major.
7) Do I need a letter of recommendation?
Yes. Your letter of recommendation must be written by a teacher or school professional.
8) Is there an income limit for financial need to be determined?
Yes, financial need is a factor. Your parent/guardian must sign the application affirming need-based financial assistance if you think that you will be eligible for financial aid at the college or university to which you are applying.
9) Which college can I attend?
You can attend any accredited four-year institution or any accredited two-year institution.
10) Who selects the scholarship recipient?
The recipient will be selected by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee.
11) When is the recipient notified?
The recipient of a scholarship will receive notification via mail by mid-May. And, we will post names of recipients on our website.
12) If I am selected, when do I get my scholarship?
We will send the money directly to your college or university to be credited to your account.
Must I apply as a new applicant or a re-applicant?
You must apply as a new applicant if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, African American male and current Gwynn Park High School, Laurel High School, or Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology graduating senior at the time of your application.
You must apply as a re-applicant if you were awarded a scholarship in a previous year to assist you in pursuing a four-year Undergraduate or two-year Associate’s degree.
I received a scholarship this year. Must I reapply for a scholarship for the next school year?
Yes. You must download and complete the application for re-applicants in order for the Foundation to determine if you are a student in good academic standing by your school each academic year; and, for the Foundation to keep its records current.
