Accokeek, MD, February 19, 2010 – The Ryan Odelle Mance Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Incorporated (the Foundation), a higher education scholarship organization that supports deserving and talented African American male high school students with financial need, will host its 2nd Annual Evening of Jazz benefit event on Saturday, March 27, 2010, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Held at Camelot by Martin’s in Upper Marlboro, MD, the Evening of Jazz features the jazz band, Abstract Truth. This gifted musical talent is the masterful interplay of: G. Lawrence Francis – Bassist/Bandleader/Vocals; Scott Coulter – Piano/Keyboard/Organ; Jesse Andrus – Tenor/Alto/Soprano Sax/Flute/Vocals; Sultan Akbar – Drummer/Lead Vocals; and Rajul – Percussion/Vocals. “Abstract Truth manages to create a sound that is at once fresh and familiar, honoring the masters who came before them, while creating a sound all their own.”
The Foundation’s 2nd Annual Evening of Jazz boasts three hours filled with live jazz, wonderful cuisine, and a silent auction. Hosted this year by Master of Ceremonies Derek McGinty of WUSA 9NEWS NOW, the 2nd Annual Evening of Jazz raises funds to continue its mission to help increase access to higher education for deserving, talented and qualified graduating African American male students in dedication and deed. The 2nd Annual Evening of Jazz provides another opportunity to enhance and expand needed resources to further this cause.
The 2nd Annual Evening of Jazz represents the Foundation’s diverse fundraising strategy. Tickets to this event are $50 per person, the same ticket price as last year. About the Foundation
Founded just two years ago in March 2008 in honor of Ryan Odelle Mance, a young man who was murdered at the age of 21, the Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. The Foundation provides college scholarship assistance to deserving, talented and qualified high school graduating African American male students who demonstrate a reverence for academic achievement and commitment. Prior to the establishment of the Foundation, annually from 2004 to 2009, a $1,000 scholarship was awarded in Ryan’s name to a Laurel High School student. In the 2009-2010 academic year, the Foundation awarded its first scholarship in the amount of $3,000 to a Laurel High School student now attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. The Foundation will continue to provide scholarship support to its first recipient and strive to broaden its outreach efforts to deserving, talented and qualified high school graduating African American male students nationwide.
